Valiant Comics - Gold Issues
One of the more popular subsets of Valiant Comics would be the gold issues.
Valiant printed books which were identical to their "regular issue" counterparts
as an incentive for retailers and fans of Valiant Comics.
The easiest way to identify a gold issue is to check the "logo box"
in the upper left corner of the comic book. The logo box is rectangular,
contains the word 'VALIANT', the compass logo, the issue number,
and usually also contains the month and the price of the comic.
There are no Valiant gold issues which have a WHITE logo box.
REGULAR ISSUES
Regardless of the coloring of the rest of the cover, the logo box
is not white on any of the Valiant gold issue comics.
Cover prices, month, and issue number may vary.
If the logo box is white, the book is a regular issue.
The only exceptions to this rule are for comics which had dual publishers.
The Deathmate series (dually published by Valiant and Image) includes gold issues
which have gold foil applied to the cover.
The X-O Manowar #1/2 issue (dually published by Valiant and Wizard) has a gold issue
which can be identified in the title on the cover of the book.
The title is gold surrounding the X-O, rather than purple.
GOLD ISSUES
Valiant gold issues are limited to 5,000 copies in most cases, and are usually about 50 times
less common than their regular issue counterparts. Other than the logo box, and sometimes cover coloring,
these books are identical in content to the regular issues.
Gold issues were used as "thank you" issues for retailer orders, as promotional items at conventions,
as prizes in various contests, and also as general giveaways for Valiant fans.
In some instances, from 20 to 200 of these gold issues have been found together,
indicating that the limited stock of gold issues was not always distributed completely.
This page serves to provide help to buyers, sellers, and collectors of Valiant comics
who may be confused by the identification of Valiant gold issues. Often these books
are not identified correctly in auctions, websites, and other locations.
