Magnus #0 (Sendaway vs. Dealer)
There has been some confusion regarding the two versions of Magnus #0.
Originally, Magnus #0 was supposed to be available only by
cutting out coupons from Magnus #1 through Magnus #8 and
redeeming those coupons for a copy of Magnus #0.
About 9,400 copies were redeemed.
Unexpectedly, Valiant also produced copies of Magnus #0
to be given to a few dealers around the country.
One copy of Magnus #0 was given to dealers for every
10 copies of Magnus #1 they ordered months earlier.
Since Magnus #1 was the first Valiant superhero book in 1991,
many stores around the country did not order 10 or more copies.
About 8,900 copies were printed as dealer incentives.
The difference between the "coupon sendaway version" and the
"dealer incentive version" is that the dealer version
did not contain the bound-in card by Barry Windsor-Smith.
There are no other differences in the two versions of Magnus #0.
It could be argued that the "sendaway version" is worth
more than the "dealer version" because the sendaway version
includes the card.
It could also be argued that the "dealer version" is worth
more than the "sendaway version" because fewer copies were printed.
However, any "sendaway version" can be made into a "dealer version"
by simply cutting out the card.
But why would anyone cut out the card?
The card by itself is worth very little, if anything, outside of the comic.
For these reasons, Magnus #0 is generally bought and sold
at about the same price, regardless of whether it is the
coupon sendaway version or the dealer incentive version.
The "with card" version may sell for a few dollars
(on average) than the "without card" version.
The price guide on this website makes
only a slight distinction between the two versions.
