Unity is the name of the storyline (crossover) that was told in all titles of Valiant comics in 1992. Unity officially began with Chapter 1, Unity issue #0. Unity #0 was given away in stores, with a cover date of August 1992. Therefore, any Valiant comic with a cover date before August 1992 is considered "Pre-Unity". Unity continued its chapters through each title and ended in Chapter 18, Unity issue #1.
The Unity storyline was very successful and many people became interested in Valiant comics. Not surprisingly in 1992 and 1993, Valiant comics that were Pre-Unity became harder to find as people began searching for the issues they'd missed. The demand drove the prices of these comics skyward with some issues of Pre-Unity comics commanding $100 or more in the marketplace. With its success, Valiant could afford to produce more copies of each title. The supply soon equaled the demand, and in some cases, Valiant overproduced its comics. Many collectors and investors bought multiple copies of the Post-Unity comics in hopes that they would increase in value as the Pre-Unity issues did. Inevitably, the Valiant market collapsed due to the increased supply and lower demand. Today, most price guides list Valiant comics below $10 each. Many collectors are taking advantage of the lower prices and securing the once-coveted Pre-Unity issues for their collections. As a result, once again many issues of Pre-Unity are becoming harder to find. Which specific issues are Pre-Unity? A summary of the Unity Timeline is available. Covers from these comics are available for viewing under the Galleries list of pages and also in the Online Cover Library. Related info: What is Unity 2000? |
