Nintendo and WWF Comics
So what's the deal with the Nintendo and WWF Wrestling Comic Books?
In order to establish themselves as comic book publishers and to hopefully make
a few dollars, Voyager Communications, Inc. (VALIANT) actually produced their
first comic books for Nintendo in 1990.
A little later, comic books were published for WWF Wrestling.
Around 50 to 75 different comic books were produced with the VALIANT logo
under licenses from Nintendo and WWF.
Nintendo titles included Zelda, Super Mario, Captain N, and Gameboy.
Neither project is included in what came to be known as
the VALIANT Universe of superhero comic books.
The "real books", according to Jim Shooter, began with Magnus #1.
There is little appeal for a VALIANT collector in the pre-Magnus books.
The characters and stories were not VALIANT characters and stories.
A minor appeal can be found in the fact that early VALIANT artists
would have been involved in some of those works.
Nintendo and/or WWF Wrestling fans are the main audience of collectors
for these early VALIANT books.
While they are generally considered as "hard to find" issues,
they were actually produced in fairly large quantities and distributed
through toy stores and book stores...few were sold through comic shops.
Some of the pre-Magnus VALIANT books can be purchased through
Mile High Comics online store.
Because the purpose of this website is reference information for
the VALIANT universe of characters, this website does not intend
to include further pages of reference to the pre-Magnus books.
A VALIANT Nintendo website was been created by Quinton Buckley in 2001-2003
and has been archived on this website
